A Thanksgiving Day Recipe

It's Thanksgiving Day and I want to say Thanks to all of my readers that visit my blog.  I really appreciate all the wonderful comments and support I have received through my blog and have made many new friends that I cherish always.

To share in the Thanksgiving, my daughter wanted to share her delicious and fool proof recipes that she came up with at school.  ENJOY!

Translation... First get a turkey. Then I go to the farm. I make a turkey. I cook it with pumpkin, pepper, eggs, 2 cups of sugar. Put it in the pan. Put it in the oven. I eat it.
Translation... Paige's pumpkin pie

1 cup of frosting
1 cup of vanilla
1 cup of pumpkin
2 eggs
2 spoons of salt
2 spoons of sugar
3 cups of chocolate
4 teaspoons of flour

mix it together, put it in the oven, bake it at 2 degrees for 3 hours. Eat it.

{LOVE HER!}

Have a wonderful Thanksgiving Day!

Spilling the Beans...

Any guesses as to what I may be spilling the beans about?  I have a few surprises to share this year with you all, but I can't spill all the beans at once. So, I will share one of my surprises....

I am very excited to announce that I...

Oh wait, did I tell you about that one time in band camp... JUST Kidding!!!!! I was never in band.

Okay, okay... back to what I really wanted to tell you...

I am Pregnant with child #3!  YEAH!!!!
Baby is due December 11, 2011, so that makes me almost 11 weeks.  Had our first doctor appointment this week and heard the heart beat and so far everything looks great!

Paige and Matthew are so excited that they are going to have a little baby sibling.  When we asked if they could pick, what kind of baby would they want mommy to have... Paige answered with a Baby Sister and Matthew said... a Baby Robot.

Hmmm... what is your guess?

Organize your Life

Life can get pretty crazy, especially when your not organized.  When people find out that I work full time and am a full time mom, first I thing I get is the look that I am a bit crazy.  At times I do have to agree... When you find yourself not sleeping so you can get everything done or running around like a chicken with its head cut off, then yes, it gets a bit crazy.

But, honestly, what mom does not go through this?  No matter what your lifestyle is, I think every mom finds herself running a bit haywire at times.  So... in hopes of helping you other mom's... here are a few of my tips on how to handle everyday issues to help keep your life a bit more organized and to be able to do those extra things you enjoy most.

TIP 1: Working at Home with Children
This is probably the most asked question I get.  Here are a few things that work for me.

When working at the computer... try setting up a small table with a childs chair next to your workspace and tell them "This is your desk".  Setup a kids vtech laptop so they can "work" at their computer while you are on yours.

When working with paperwork... give your child some paper and a pen (kids love using pens vs. pencils because that is what mommy uses most.)  Tell them to draw you a pretty picture that you can hang next to your desk, refrigerator, where ever.  If someone's birthday is coming up, have them make that person a card.  This keeps my kids busy forever!  Oh... and make sure you give them plenty of paper, because there will be several "drafts" before the real card is done.
When working with fabric... Make an area special for your child.  If you child is old enough, set them up with their own sewing machine, whether it is a toy or real deal. I love using Charm Packs {5" squares} or the Petit Fours by Moda {2.5" squares} with my kids.  I give them a small pack and tell them to lay them out into a beautiful quilt while mommy works on her quilt or other project.  You just might be surprised at what they come up with.

When working in the kitchen... Let your kids help where they can.  If you are working on the stove, I set my daughter up with a mini skillet on the counter next to me and I pour the spices I am using into her tiny skillet and she uses her play kitchen utensils to stir and cook like mommy.

Little kids love to mimic their parents, so provide little spaces for them like yours so they can "help" you by staying busy and having FUN!

TIP 2: KEEP or SELL
I know every single one of you has looked at your kids room and wondered where the heck did all these toys come from.  Grab a garbage bag, box, whatever will hold a lot of toys.  This will become the SELL/DONATE bag.  Tell your child that you are going to play a really fun game called KEEP or SELL.  My kids LOVE this game.  I love it too because it clears up old toys and gets them to clean and organize their room at the same time.  Best of all... you are not doing it for them! Start with one toy... ask your child "Do you want to keep this toy or sell it?"  If they say SELL, then have them pick it up and put it in the SELL bag.  If they decide to KEEP the toy, then show them how to organize their toys by separating them into different bins or locations, such as balls, stuffed animals, barbies, cars, etc.  Do this to EVERY single toy they own.

I am amazed at how many toys my kids end up putting in the SELL bag.  You can then Donate the toys or put them on your next garage sale. We play this game twice a year... right before Christmas and sometime during the Summer.  I have found that this solves many issues such as... 1. They are not surprised to see their toys for sale at the next garage sale; 2. They become responsible for keeping their rooms clean since everything has a place and there is a place for everything; 3. They learn to NOT be hoarders.
This game does not have to stop with the kids... Mom and Dad can play this game with all their "toys" and knick knacks too!  Set the example and show your kids how it is done.

TIP 3: Chore Charts
I have recently started doing Chore Charts with my kids to, not only teach them how to be responsible and dependable, but to keep my insanity.  There are days where all I feel like I have done is pick up toy after toy, washed clothes after clothes, and cleaned bathroom after bathroom.  NO MORE!  YOU make the mess... YOU clean it up.  So here is a little freebie I want to share with you all... a printable Chore Chart
By gosh, every kid must have their own colors for their chart. I first started with the multicolor, but my daughter insisted she have a pink and purple chart. So, I created a few different versions to fit each style of child.  Place a sticker in each box they complete and at the end of each week, give them a reward or allowance for completing all their chores.

TIP 4: Closets
When was the last time you wore those MC Hammer pants or Units... seriously! You should go through your clothes on a yearly basis.  Anything you have not worn in the last year or two, get rid of it!  Donate it, sell it, give it away... something.  There is no need to keep clothes in closet that take up valuable space that could be used for other items.

I learned this trick from a good friend of mine and IT WORKS!  Start by turning all your hangers backwards on the rack.  As you wear an item of clothing, wash and hang it back up the right way.  When the year is over, take a look at your wardrobe.  Do ya have a lot of backward hangers?  Everything that is still hanging backwards has not been worn in a year. Go through those backward hanging items and decide what you want to KEEP or SELL.  Be honest... are you really going to wear that mini skirt or parachute pants again?
Do the same thing with you kids closets.  Kids tend to outgrow their clothes every year anyway... I like to go through my kids clothes at least twice a year... spring and fall.  That way you are not caught off guard when the snow hits and realize your kids don't have any warm clothes to wear.

Color code your closets.  You may think this is a bit extreme, but you will be surprised at how quickly and easily it is to find things... not to mention that it looks much nicer and well kept.

TIP 5: Get your finances organized.
Use a budget software such as Quicken. We use Quicken and it saves me a lot of headaches and stress because I know exactly what we have coming in and going out at all times.  It also helps to know where your money went each month, such as Medical, Groceries, and more.

Now... tomorrow {January 14} is National Organize Your Home Day, so get a fresh start on the New Year and go organize your life!

A horse is horse, of course, of course...

For Paige's 5th Birthday she wanted a HORSE party.  So here is a little recap of the Horse party we came up with.

The kids watched Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron  {a horse movie}... Paige really likes this movie and it was her idea to have a movie party. We ordered in Pizza and had Popcorn with the movie. I found these cute little Popcorn holders from the fabulous Hobby Lobby stores.
Red Bandana paper bowls from Hobby Lobby
I gathered up all of Paige's horses and used them for decorations along with some Red Bandana tablecloths and towels and a matching quilt for all the kids to sit on while watching the movie.  You can get these great Moda Home items from Home a la mode.
Stick Horses as little giveaways for all her little friends.  (SCORE: a buck each from the Dollar Tree!)
Added a bit of grosgrain ribbon to pretty them up.
To top it all off, I made her a pillow case dress that had an embroidered Horse on it.

I think I will be making her some more of these for the summer... SUPER EASY and QUICK to make.  Thanks to Craft Challenge: Dozens of Ways to Repurpose a Pillowcase book.
Everyone seemed to have a blast.... especially this big girl.

Memories....

A lot has happened in the past 10 years. There were a lot of firsts and many memories we will never forget...

We built and moved into our new home...

We have two beautiful children...

We bought our very first home and sold it 3 years later...

We spent some quality time together before having kids...

We welcomed new nieces and nephews into the world...
(total of 3 nieces and 7 nephews)

We said goodbye to a beautiful niece just hours after her birth... Faith, we love you!

10 years ago today... we were married!
Oh... and if you are wondering who these crazy looking people are... that is my family. My dad's brothers and sisters all came together and performed a skit about Richie and I at our Reception. I have to say it caught me and Richie by complete surprise and I will always remember it. I love you guys and thanks for helping make our wedding so memorable.

Happy 10th Anniversary, Richie! I love you very much and will for many, many more years to come.

The Total Package...

Meet Paige...
Paige is a very good girl. She is well mannered, loves to help mommy around the house, listens pretty good most of the time, goes potty like a big girl, does not like to be dirty... my kind of girl.

Meet Matthew...
Matthew, generally can be a good boy. He eats like a big boy, loves to cuddle, doesn't talk much yet.. actually talks another language that only he understands, still in diapers (which that is soon to change), loves to make a mess and get dirty. He is my little cuddle bug, but I could really do without the messy kid in him...

Lately, Matthew has had this thing about taking off all of his clothes and diaper and running around the house naked... What is up with that!?
Well, this morning... that did not change. Paige again, notified me that "Mashoo dressed"... translation = Matthew has un-dressed. SO... on with a new diaper, new clothes... all good.

As I am about to take a break from work to go feed the kids lunch, Paige yells from the hall... "OH NO Mashoo tee tee". I get up from my desk, look down the hall and this is what I see...

WARNING: KIDS... DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME!

A-A-A-A-K-K-K! YUK-K-K! No... no... no... this did not just happen!

I literally just stood there for a moment gathering my thoughts trying to figure out where to start. Bleh...

Put Matthew in the bath...

Clean the poop from the floor and the wall... Luckily we have a steam deep cleaner to get it out of the carpet... yuk! Paige was my little cheerleader while cleaning up this lovely little mess. "Good girl Mommy... clean the walls"... she makes me laugh when she repeats stuff like I would say it.
Whew... much better... clean floors once again. For those of you that know me well... you know how much I hate having a dirty house.

Matthew is all clean once again and things are back to normal. I think this shirt was made for him...

Finishing Touches - Day 5

Last Day of Finishing Touches... I promise!
In our Kitchen, I basically had to convince my husband and our builder that black and dark oak cabinets would actually look good... or at least I think so. They were trying to convince me that the bottom cabinets needed to be a shade of white if we were going to have them painted. I stuck to my guns and am so happy I did.... they even started to see my vision once it was completed. I love the way it turned out and would not change 1 thing.
I love accenting with white dishes... I think it is just so simple and elegant. They go with just about everything and no matter what the occasion, you can always add a splash of color with other things like linens and other decor.
I really enjoy displaying my great grandmother's doilies that she made. I never met my great grandmother as she lived and passed in England, but my grandmother did give me a few of her cherished handmade doilies. I also did get to talk to her once on the phone when I was a little girl and I still remember her british accent. She did such beautiful work.
Our breakfast room...
Paige and Matthew's little table and chairs that I recovered in the red dottie vinyl coated fabric by Moda Home.
I also re-covered these chairs with a faux leather... much easier for spills.
In our old house I had made some long drapes for our living room and this house the windows were too high. So... I repurposed some of the drapes into these kitchen curtains...
I was able to use two of the panels as they were in our dining room. The rest of the fabric I re-purposed into pillows for our living room so that all three of the main rooms coordinated in some way.
Our dining room and entry...
Another one of my great grandmothers handmade doilies that sits on our dining room table....
